Download PDF – Annual Report 2016
Each year we produce our annual report to tell you how many young people and their families we have helped, how we have used the funding that was provided to us and the impact those dollars have on young people in our community. This year is no different, and you will find all of that and more in this report.
I’m very proud of all we accomplished in 2016. Two of the biggest highlights are that we had the highest rating a nonprofit can achieve on Charity Navigator for the sixth year in a row! Four stars for six years! Nationally, less than four percent of nonprofits are able to achieve that.
We were also awarded funding to open a new program to house homeless young people from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. It’s for a program called Rapid Re-Housing in which homeless youth ages 18 to 24 will receive support from our organization so that they can sign a lease for their own apartment. Support from our organization will gradually taper off until they are able to afford their rent without our help. This model has been used with much success for adults who are homeless but this year marks the first time HUD has funded programs that work with young people. We are very proud to be among the first in the country to be implementing this model for youth.
Our established programs are going strong as well. We served our vulnerable youth by providing safe havens at the Emergency Shelter for Teenagers and with our longer term housing supports. We saw young people graduate from high school and move on to higher education and employment, homeless young mothers learning to be the active, nurturing parent they have always wanted to be, and more children and youth improving their academic performance. It was a good year!
But we can’t stop here, because there are more young people who need our help. We have the largest waiting lists of homeless young people who want to come into our programs since our organization opened in 1972. More than 50 young people are waiting for a safe haven and the help they need to move forward with their lives. At our organization we are all committed to doing what it takes to provide safe havens and opportunities to grow and thrive for all young people. We will continue to step in at those critical moments when support can mean the difference between a safe launch into a successful life or a long struggle to stay afloat.
