Internships

Interns are a valuable part of our organization. They work directly with our youth to provide services and support. Second Story works with students of accredited universities and colleges who are enrolled in programs that require an internship as part of the program. Undergraduate and Master’s-level internships are available. On a limited basis, we may accept applications from high school internship programs.

Undergraduate and High School Internships

  • Undergraduate and High School internships usually last one semester or summer. Daytime hours are usually 9am-3pm or longer depending on school program requirements. Number of week days are also dependent on school hour requirements and are usually 1-3 days per week. These internships are usually done in Second Story for Teens in Crisis and Second Story in the Community.
  • Undergraduate students in Psychology, Social Work, or Sociology work directly with Second Story for Teens in Crisis residents supervising daily schedules, leading groups, answering hotline calls, and helping staff as needed.
  • If required by the school program, supervision is provided weekly by either a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Masters-level Social Worker.

Graduate-Level Internships

Graduate level internships last at least two semesters and are dependent on the type of program.

Community Counseling or Mental Health Counseling

  • Interns work at Second Story for Teens in Crisis two evenings per week and one weekend day, either Saturdays 12-8pm or Sundays 2-10pm. Practicum students need to commit to also doing their internship at Second Story for Teens in Crisis. Internship students may be accepted for two semesters if they have done their practicum experience elsewhere.
  • Interns work directly with Second Story for Teens in Crisis residents conducting groups, individual counseling sessions, mental health assessments, intake interviews, and eventually, family counseling sessions.
  • One internship is available at Second Story for Young Mothers to provide individual counseling and life skills groups, usually two to three evenings a week.
  • Supervision from a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) is provided weekly.

Social Work

  • Interns work with the Second Story for Homeless Youth’s Rapid Rehousing program, which is usually two days per week during business hours, or Second Story for Young Mothers, which are usually Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and evenings.
  • Graduate students in Social Work work directly with Second Story for Homeless Youth with case management, leading groups, and helping young people find housing and resources for independence, and in Second Story for Young Mothers leading groups, providing case management, and assessing and caring for infants and toddlers.
  • Weekly supervision is provided by a Masters level Social Worker with supervision experience.
