Spring is finally here and I don’t know about you but I can feel summer in the air.
I know I’m not the only one. Another school year is coming to a close, and young people are looking forward to leaving classrooms behind for summer fun. But first there are final papers, final exams, SOLs, and a lot of hard work. Our staff are spending their time helping young people prepare for that final push of the school year, just as we will be there all summer providing enrichment activities and making sure the basics aren’t forgotten during the summer recess. For the young people in our programs, it is sometimes hard to focus on school because of overcrowding or conflict at home, or because they have become homeless during the school year. Our staff and volunteers are there to help them succeed.
For the high school seniors in our programs, graduation day is drawing near and they are moving on to new experiences and challenges. Last year, 100 percent of the high school seniors in our program for homeless youth graduated. We also typically see more than 95 percent of the high school seniors at our Teen Center graduate. Often, these young people will be the first generation in their families to graduate from high school, and many go on to college or postsecondary education.
We wish all of our students luck as they study for final exams and SOLs, as they write their final papers, and as they head into the summer.
