Camila’s Second Story

When “Camila’s” teachers recommended that Camila be placed in accelerated classes so that she could learn faster and have more opportunities in school, she was nervous. So she went to Second Story in the Community’s Safe Youth Project Program Coordinator for advice. Anna was excited to hear the news — she had noticed how smart Camila was. Camila was always responsible and completed all her homework assignments.  She also enjoyed coming to the program. Anna knew she would thrive in accelerated classes!

Camila took her advice and began the program the next semester. At first, things were very difficult. She was always last to finish her homework because of her extra assignments. Sometimes she got frustrated seeing all of her friends playing while she she was stuck with pages of homework yet to complete. By the end of the first quarter, Camila was behind on her work, stressed, and exhausted.

Anna took note. She knew that Camila was equipped to do well in the accelerated program — she just needed a new plan. Anna and the volunteers spent time helping Camila complete her assignments each day, being careful to explain concepts she didn’t yet understand, and her grades went up drastically in all of her subjects. Her GPA even improved by .5 points between the first and second quarter, which put her at the top of her Safe Youth Project class!

When Camila heard the news, she was thrilled. At times she had doubted herself, but Anna and the volunteers always believed in her. They knew that, with just a little extra help, she had all the potential to succeed.
