Bookkeeper

Part-time 20 hours/week, in-person (20%) and remote (80%)

Second Story is a nonprofit organization that provides safe havens and supportive services for youth and families in Northern Virginia. We are seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Bookkeeper to join our team in a flexible, part-time role.

The Bookkeeper is responsible for managing day-to-day entry of financial transactions and supporting the processes that generate those transactions. Key activities include entry and management of accounts payable and accounts receivable, reconciliation of bank and credit statements, and preparation of monthly and year books. The Bookkeeper works closely with the Accounting Director and Chief Operating Officer to ensure financial accuracy, compliance, and integrity across the organization.

Key Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Quickbooks Online, Bill (formerly Bill.com), and Microsoft Excel
  • Familiarity with basic accounting principles and standard bookkeeping practices
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High ethical standards with a commitment to Second Story’s mission

Preferred Experience: 

  • Familiarity with Salesforce
  • Experience in nonprofit and grants-based environments

  • One teenager receives a safe haven, warm bed, food, and round-the-clock support for five nights at Second Story for Teens in Crisis, or
  • Eight months of therapy for a young woman in the Second Story for Young Mothers program.

  • One teen receives daily counseling during a three-week stay at Second Story for Teens in Crisis, or
  • Twenty counseling sessions for the children and teens who are at-risk and participating in our after-school programs.

  • Two weeks of food for a young mother and her child at Second Story for Young Mothers.
